Eve Online
I'm sure many of you ( or at least most, some, any? ) have heard of Eve Online. Certainly not one of the "popular" MMO's such as World of Warcraft, Star Wars Galaxies (prenerf), Everquest ( 1-2 ), but it has qualities that keep it competitive among the "top" ranks. Eve is the largest dynamic shardless online world available, and certainly one of the most visually appealing.
Currently stuck inside your capsule, you find yourself able to go anywhere at anytime. (barring someone violencing you) After just a few clicks and stargate firing animations you may find yourself face to face with a wall of hatred and despair known in-game as a "blob" ( 20+ player ships, up to 200+ ), or blissful uninterrupted asteroid belt mining and NPC hunting. "Professions" aren't really the point of Eve, as anyone can do anything given the time. And time is what you'll have.
Since you aren't forced to "grind" level your skills, they train morning, noon, and night automatically. Character "level" is best described as age by using the in-game numbers known as Skill Points. For instance, a character with 5 million skill points inside eve isn't usually very old, probably 6 months or so, if allowed the best possible attributes. A player with 70 million Skill Points is most likely a 4 year player or older, almost always with fairly decent skills and experience.
Then the beauty of Eve.
Age or SP amount doesn't directly tie in with intelligence, or PvP ability. Our 6 month "Noob" may be very highly specialized and very highly trained, whereas the 4 year "Veteran" may have just either bought the character, or never had the PvP experience.
This translates into anyone having the ability, but not always the talent to take over and control parts of eve. Be it in the dangerous system of Jita, or in the far reaches of Nullsec where Concord Police forces don't have the manpower to respond to your cries for help.
Given time, you can become a market mogul, controlling certain items of worth, or a Fleet Warfare god, sending forth hundreds of minions to crush your neighboring alliance for smack-talking in local chat.
In the end, it doesn't matter, as the old adage rings true....."In space, noone can hear you scream."
